About a month ago, I took steadying breaths and gave myself a good internal pep talk as I knocked on the door of a company called Chew here in Cambridge. I knew almost nothing about them beyond a vague impression of food science (they call themselves “snack food engineers”), and I’d caught intriguing glimpses of lab coats and kitchen equipment through the windows on my runs through the neighborhood. So I dropped off my resume and figured I would at least get to learn more about their work. Two weeks later, I accepted a job offer and just like that, I moved to the inside of those windows.

So I guess this little temporary jaunt to Boston may prove less temporary than I originally thought. Once warmer temperatures return, I think I’ll be pretty stoked about that. The job so far is like nothing I’ve ever done, and I love both the work and the atmosphere. We tackle product development from a combination of the culinary and food science points of view, which is exactly how I like to think about things. It’s certainly a hit-the-ground-running sort of situation–I accepted the job on a Tuesday, started that Wednesday, and was making progress on projects by Friday. There’s no time to lose in a start-up!

In between making major life decisions and searching for a new apartment, I’ve somehow managed to also leave town pretty much every weekend. I wrote this on a bus heading back from a weekend in New York City (center of the universe), where the main objective was to eat as much as possible with a secondary objective of fine arts. Between Chicago’s winning combination of old friends and mind-blowing food and a road trip to Vermont that involved both sledding and car singing at full volume, I have had so much fun.
I can’t quite take in everything that’s happening–it doesn’t seem real that four months ago I lived in Chicago and worked in a restaurant. It’s quite a wild ride over here lately! I’m hanging on for dear life but also having a blast.
